Leukorrhea is a thick and whitish colored vaginal
discharge. It is often a symptom of vaginal infection, such as that
caused by the one-celled microorganism "Trichomonas vaginalis",
"chlamydia", or "monilia" (also known as yeast, or
"Candida albicans"). It may also be caused by too much
douching, a vitamin B complex deficiency, the use of antibiotics or
oral contraceptives, or intestinal parasitic
worms. Leukorrhea often occurs in women who have diabetes or are
pregnant. The amount of the discharge increases as estrogen levels in
the body are elevated. Leukorrhea may occur with other symptoms, like
burning and itching of the vulva. Blood present in the discharge may
indicate a more serious disorder.
