About 50 million Americans have hypertension and according to the U.S. Public Health Service,  hypertension affects more than 50% of all Americans over 65 years old. Men tend to suffer from  hypertension and high blood pressure more than women. But the risk for women goes up after menopause reaching men's risk levels for high blood pressure. Because, hypertension may cause no symptoms until problems occur it is also called the "silent killer". In 1990 over 33,000 Americans died from hypertension related diseases. Arteriosclerosis and atherosclerosis often occur prior to hypertension. Your blood  pressure should be taken several times during a day to be accurate as a single reading is normally not good enough.
